Inside Girls in Wonderland Weekend

Every year, Orlando transforms into something a little more magical than its usual theme-park sparkle. It becomes home to Girls in Wonderland, one of the most iconic and long-running lesbian and sapphic festivals in the United States. It is a multi-day celebration where queer women, trans, nonbinary, and the broader WLW community gather from around the world to connect, dance, and simply exist in joy together.

What began more than two decades ago as a grassroots idea from the powerhouse production team behind Pandora Events has evolved into a cultural institution within queer nightlife and community spaces. Founded by Yesi Leon, Amy Alonso, and Alison Burgos, Girls in Wonderland was created at a time when dedicated spaces for queer women were limited and often overshadowed in larger LGBTQ+ nightlife scenes. Over the years, it has grown into a landmark event, regularly drawing thousands of attendees for a full weekend of pool parties, live DJs, performances, comedy shows, and late-night dance floors that don’t stop until sunrise.

But beyond the music and the parties, what makes Girls in Wonderland one-of-a-kind is something much deeper: the sense of belonging it creates.

For many attendees, it is one of the rare spaces where they are not explaining themselves, translating their identities, or searching for belonging, they are simply living authentically. The event has become a kind of annual reunion for queer women across generations and geographies, offering a shared cultural moment that feels both celebratory and grounding.

“It’s not just a weekend to escape, but it’s a space where you can drop the weight you didn’t realize you were carrying and just exist as yourself.” - Kirstie Nicole

A Weekend Built on Connection

The structure of Girls in Wonderland is intentionally immersive. Guests stay in host hotels where much of the programming unfolds in real time with poolside parties during the day, themed nightlife events after dark, and spontaneous moments of connection in between. The result is an environment where friendships form quickly, conversations happen effortlessly, and community feels less like a concept and more like memories for a lifetime.

In a landscape where queer women’s spaces have historically been harder to find, Girls in Wonderland has become a rare anchor point and an annual reminder that these communities don’t just exist, they thrive when given space to be celebrated as themselves.

The Amistara Joins the Conversation

This year, The Amistara is proud to sponsor Girls in Wonderland, aligning with the festival’s long-standing mission of connection and community-building. Founder, Kirstie Nicole, will be guest-appearing at Girls in Wonderland to amplify the event’s focus on community, and spaces where people feel a true sense of belonging.

At its core, The Amistara exists to respond to a very real and often unspoken craving in today’s world: the need for authentic friendship, chosen connection, and spaces where people feel like they truly belong. In an era where digital interaction is at our fingertips, but genuine community can feel harder to access, this partnership reflects a shared belief that meaningful relationships are not a luxury, they are essential.

Supporting Girls in Wonderland is a natural extension of that mission. The festival is already doing the work of bringing people together in real life, in shared space, in celebration. The Amistara simply helps amplify that intention, shining a light on the importance of building and protecting environments where connection can happen easily and unapologetically.
