Unity Cove Is Redefining Swimwear and What It Means to Feel Comfortable in Your Own Skin

Editor's Thoughts: What stood out to me most in this conversation is how deeply personal the foundation of Unity Cove is, and how a lived experience has been transformed into something that resonates far beyond one identity or community. I think we can all relate to that moment of trying on a piece of clothing that feels unfamiliar to us and instantly feeling a sense of discomfort, immediately knowing it just isn’t meant for us. Unity Cove speaks directly to that feeling. It’s not just about swimwear, but about removing that friction entirely and creating something that allows people to feel at ease in their bodies.
Born out of a deeply personal experience, the brand started with a feeling many people know but rarely talk about: not seeing yourself reflected in what’s available. “I’ve always struggled to find pieces that felt right for my body and identity,” the founder shares. “I didn’t connect with traditionally feminine styles, but I also didn’t feel comfortable in men’s clothing.” That in-between space, where nothing quite fits, can be isolating. “I know what it feels like to be the odd one in a room, or to miss an event entirely because I couldn’t find the ‘right’ thing to wear.”
Swimwear only amplified that feeling. As a big-chested tomboy, the options often felt like a compromise between comfort, coverage, and authenticity. “I wanted something I could wear to swim, go for a walk, or just live in without changing how I show up.” That idea became the foundation of Unity Cove: gender-inclusive, active swimwear designed to move with you, not against you.

Because at its core, swimwear is one of the most vulnerable categories of clothing. “If something doesn’t sit right on your body, it’s almost impossible to feel confident,” they explain. And for many people, it goes beyond aesthetics. It’s about whether you feel comfortable enough to exist in a space at all. “Self-expression starts with feeling at ease in your body. When you’re not constantly adjusting or overthinking how you look, you can actually be present.”
That philosophy is what sets Unity Cove apart. Instead of designing within the rigid expectations of femininity or masculinity, the brand removes the pressure entirely. “Traditional swimwear often tells you how you should look,” they say. “We focus on how it feels to wear.” The pieces are intentionally built for real life, made to transition from swimming to walking to everyday movement, shifting the focus away from categories and toward experience.
From the beginning, that meant rejecting the binary altogether. “The gap wasn’t just about style, it was about how people feel,” they explain. “There are so many people, regardless of how they identify, who feel uncomfortable in traditional swimwear.” Unity Cove approaches gender-inclusivity not as a label, but as a design principle. There are so many people, regardless of how they identify, who feel uncomfortable in traditional swimwear.
"From the beginning, I wanted to create something that didn’t force people into a box. Gender-inclusive, to me, means designing for real bodies and real lives. It’s less about labels and more about creating something that actually feels right when you put it on."
And that intention has resonated far beyond the queer community. Unity Cove is about creating pieces that work for more people - not just in terms of identity, but body type and lifestyle as well. While Unity Cove is proudly queer-owned, its reach has grown globally, with customers across identities and a strong plus-size community. “The problem we’re solving, feeling uncomfortable in traditional fashion, is something a lot of people relate to.” With sizing currently up to 6XL and plans to expand further, inclusivity isn’t just messaging, it’s built into the product itself.
But the most powerful impact shows up in the stories people share. Customers describe wearing Unity Cove as the first time they’ve felt comfortable swimming in public, or the first time they didn’t feel the need to hide. “One of the biggest things we hear is relief,” they say. “That feeling of ‘this just feels right.’” For some, it means finally showing up to beach days they used to avoid. For others, it becomes part of their everyday wardrobe, something they can rely on without second-guessing themselves.
Because what Unity Cove is really creating isn’t just swimwear. It’s the ability to exist more freely in your own body. To show up without hesitation. To move through the world without constantly adjusting, hiding, or shrinking.
