Melissa Lee: The Power of Showing What’s Possible for Queer Families

Melissa Lee @missyhalle shares her life as part of a queer family, creating visibility, representation, and connection for LGBTQ+ families online | She Comes With Baggage Media

Editor's Thoughts: This story matters to me because I know what it feels like to grow up without seeing yourself reflected anywhere. When you don’t have representation, you’re left trying to imagine a future you’ve never actually seen, and that can feel isolating in ways people don’t always understand. That’s why Melissa’s story hits the heart. She’s not just sharing her life, she’s creating visibility for what family can look like in so many different forms. There’s something really powerful about seeing love exist without conditions, without explanation, just as it is. It’s a reminder that family isn’t one fixed idea, it’s something we get to build, define, and live out in our own way. And at the core of it all, love should always be the foundation.

Melissa Lee didn’t set out to become a voice for queer families online. It started with something simple, gratitude. After she and her partner Kim won a free wedding, Melissa began sharing pieces of their story as a way to give back to the inclusive vendors who made that moment possible. But what began as a thank you quickly turned into something much bigger.

In opening up their lives, Melissa found herself building a community of people who had never seen a family like hers reflected back at them before. A multiracial lesbian family, visible, joyful, and real. “We got to connect with so many people,” she shares, “but also really feel like it made a positive impact.” What she created wasn’t just content, it was representation in its most tangible form.

For Melissa, that visibility is deeply personal. Growing up, she didn’t have examples of what her life could look like. “When I was younger, there were hardly any out lesbians, let alone same-sex multiracial families,” she says, and "when you’ve never seen something, it’s hard to imagine it for yourself." That’s what drives her now, showing what’s possible so others don’t have to question if it exists.

Her platform has become a space where honesty and connection live side by side. From openly sharing the realities of trying to conceive as a queer couple to simply documenting everyday family life, the response has been overwhelming. Messages from queer individuals, parents, and families continue to remind her why she started. “I’ve had so many people thank me,” she says. “I’m incredibly grateful and honored to have the platform that I do.”

But her story didn’t begin in ease. Melissa grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness, where being gay wasn’t something that was accepted or even openly discussed. Leaving that environment meant navigating life without the support of her family and learning how to build a chosen family from the ground up. It’s an experience many LGBTQ+ people understand, and one she doesn’t shy away from sharing. “I really lean into the fact that it does get better after coming out,” she says. “Even for those of us that really experienced loss.”

That honesty also comes with challenges. Sharing your life publicly, especially as a queer family, opens the door to both love and criticism. Melissa is clear-eyed about that reality. “There will always be hate in the world,” she says. But for her, the balance is worth it. The connections, the friendships, the reminders that love still outweighs everything else. “Love wins if you focus on the good.”

Still, boundaries matter. Melissa is intentional about what she shares, keeping parts of her family life offline to ensure her children have a grounded, organic upbringing. “I think I only share about 50% of our lives,” she explains. That balance allows her to be both present as a parent and purposeful as a storyteller.

At the center of her content is joy and not the curated kind, but the kind that comes from growth, healing, and building something new. “There’s beauty in the breakdown,” she reflects. From leaving her past behind to creating a family rooted in unconditional love, Melissa’s story is filled with moments of both loss and transformation. And sharing that joy only amplifies it.

For other queer parents or those just beginning their journey, her message is simple: there is no one right way. “Every journey looks different,” she says. “There are only choices that are right for your family.” It’s a reminder that building a life doesn’t have to follow a blueprint, it just has to feel true.

That perspective is grounded in a guiding principle she carries with her: Ubuntu “I am because we are.” It’s a belief that our lives are interconnected, that every interaction leaves an impact. Through her content, Melissa is intentional about what she puts into the world: kindness, acceptance, love, and community.

Looking ahead, her hope is both simple and powerful. "I hope that as more families exist out loud and proud, queer families stop being seen as taboo and are treated like the family next door" she says, "with the same chaos, the same love, and the same values as anyone else." She shares that if even one person feels seen, understood, or less alone because of her story, Melissa already considers that enough.
